Releasing

When the homemade slippers come out front and center in our kitchen basket, friends and family know that I am in full fall mode  – sweaters are unearthed from deep drawers, mittens and hats are dug out of boxes and I have an extra skip to my daily rhythms –  because I LOVE the fall.

I also love the feel of crisp temperatures, the sound of lapping waves on the shores of Lake Simcoe, the taste of homemade chai lattes, (to be honest, I enjoy chai lattes year ‘round!)  the sight of bright reds and burnt yellows in the leaves and the smell of autumn soups on the stove.

I’m always curious why so many people choose to anticipate the fall as “Yuck! The winter is coming” rather than, “Yes! The fall is here.”  There is magnificent beauty in all-season “present moment” focus but deciduous trees – the ones that lose their leaves for the winter season – offer our senses the visual reminder and the felt invitation to let go. There is such beauty and freedom in releasing.

What do you want, need and/or sense to release in your life?

“A palms-up, palms-down prayer is a simple way of praying,” Katherine continued, “but I find the physical gestures help me focus on letting go and receiving. Think of the things that are worrying, troubling and distracting you, and place your palms down as you turn those cares over to God. Then when you’re ready, turn your palms face up to receive what God has for you. Feel free to release and receive as many times as you need to.”  Page 180, Sensible Shoes

In this season of transition as the trees shed their leaves, I invite you to shed that which burdens you and receive what God has for you.

  1. Diane – I am right with you – I love fall. I find that it is a time of releasing business, long days of working in the yard, hot and humid temperatures, and feeling like I never get everything done. However, it is also a time for me to slow down, to take slower walks, to enjoy having windows open and sleeping with background music of crickets and owls. It is a time to sit and read, take nice afternoon naps, to wear slippers and sweaters, and to just be still in the presence of God. It is a time to hibernate and prepare for the wonders of winter. I love what God brings with the season of Fall – it is always a surprise and always very needed by my soul.
